Ultimate Wine Tasting Experience at California Wine Fair
On April 9th, 2018 our students and
faulty attended the California Wine Fair which is an all-inclusive, walk around
wine tasting event where wine lovers have an elite opportunity to sample wines
and meet numerous vintners and winery personalities from the Golden State. Upon
entrance, participants gained full access to try an incredible selection of
California wine at the various stations throughout the room. Each ticket
included admission, access to all wines being poured and light hors d’oeuvres.
Over 100 wineries signed up for the fair this
year, so our students had a great chance to learn and educate themselves about
the wines from California. Currently, the state accounts for nearly 90 percent of American wine production. If
California were a separate country, it would be the world's fourth largest wine
producer. Today there are more than 1,200 wineries in the state, ranging from
small boutique wineries to large corporations with distribution around the
globe.
Over one hundred grape varieties are grown in
California including French, Italian and Spanish as well as hybrid grapes and
new vitis vinifera varieties developed at the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology. At the California Wine Fair our students could taste
the traditional wine styles, as well as more fruit dominant New World wines.
The reliably warm weather allows many wineries in California to use very ripe
fruit which creates more fruit flavor. Participating at wine tasting
events is a great way for our students to educate and entertain themselves, to
meet professional wine tasters and sommeliers, talk to wineries representatives
and learn about their products first hand.
