Michael Jackson will be sorely missed by all of us here at Kiwi Collection…but will he be missed by all of our hotels?
MJ was a frequenter of many of the fine hotels in the Kiwi Collection.
And, well, he wasn’t always the easiest guest.
Here are some of Michael Jackson’s most memorable hotel moments.
Michael Jackson Unleashes his Inner Child at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower: 2007
Are we really surprised to learn that Michael Jackson demanded that a children’s xylophone, sweets and gigantic 6 foot by 6 foot mirror be brought up to his room while he was checking in to the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in London?
It was rumored at the time that he was in London in 2007 to sell his rights to his catalogue of Beatles Songs after running up huge debts which were believed to total an unthinkable £180 million! Maybe he needed to relieve some stress?
Even though he spent his time playing with a child’s toy and satisfying his sweet tooth, at least he did it in style. The Jumeirah Carlton Tower is possibly one of the most sophisticated hotels in London.
With 220 rooms and 59 suites of varying sizes, guests get breathtaking views of London, the use of beautiful well-crafted furniture, and balconies overlooking Cadogan Gardens.
Let’s hope MJ came up for air during the jam session to appreciate the beauty of this great hotel.
Michael Jackson’s Famous “Baby Dangling” Incident at Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin: 2002
Ironically Michael Jackson’s business in Berlin was to accept an award for his philanthropic work on behalf of children when he famously dangled his then nine-month-old son, Prince Michael II, over the balcony of his room at Hotel Adlon.
Usually known for his antics INSIDE hotels, this is probably Michael Jackson’s most memorable hotel moment (even though it technically happened outside the hotel). Certainly the folks at Hotel Adlon haven’t forgotten about it.
About 200 fans were present when Michael Jackson tried to “connect” with them by hanging Prince Michael II over the side of his fifth floor balcony, one arm around his neck with a towel draped over his head.
MJ should have spent more time with Prince Michael II inside his room at Hotel Adlon because it is one of Berlin’s greatest hotels. A true symbol of luxury in the German capital, it’s one of Berlin’s most expensive places to stay.
With 304 luxurious rooms and 78 suites, this hotel is in the heart of the city right next to the famous Brandenburg Gate. You don’t get better scenery then that.
Michael Jackson Satisfies his Desire for Spicy Buffalo Wings at the Burj al-Arab Hotel: 2005
Most people go to the famous Burj al-Arab in Dubai for the luxurious rooms, great personalized service and prime Dubai location.
Not MJ.
Michael Jackson was there purely for the spicy Buffalo wings when he visited the hotel in 2005. He was there with his buddies Mohammed Bin Sulayem, the UAE’s champion rally driver, and Sheik Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa (now the King of Bahrain). The pair was accompanying Michael Jackson while he toured around Dubai.
It’s too bad that MJ only sampled the Buffalo Wings because the restaurant at the Burj al-Arab is recognized as one of the top ten best hotel restaurants in the world. Here, you can dine among the stars or under the sea (literally).
Designed to resemble a billowing sail, the Burj al-Arab dominates Dubai’s coastline. Guests enjoy chauffeur driven Rolls Royces, discreet in-suite check in, private reception desks on every floor and an entourage of high-trained butlers who provide around-the-clock attention (and warm diet cokes? That would totally be MJ’s style).
Mickey Mouse…err Michael Jackson… at the Dorchester Hotel: 2005
During his stay at London’s swank Dorchester Hotel, Michael Jackson gave the resident maid quite a fright (and one assumes, quite a mess) when he opened the door dressed in a full on Mickey Mouse costume.
Mickey…errr…Michael…was having a jelly and ice cream food fight with his young children, who were dressed as Tinkerbell, Peter Pan and Captain Hook respectfully.
We can only imagine the state of affairs when the King of Pop and his prodigy left the hotel after a night of costume mayhem and food flinging. Yikes!
The Dorchester is found in the heart of Mayfair (London’s most chichi neighbourhood) and had a £10 million restoration a few years ago. This was done to make the rooms the most sophisticated in Europe (technology wise), while maintaining the original art deco look and feel of the building.
Michael Jackson Roams Through the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai in 1996:
Michael Jackson’s stay at the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai was truly shocking to the staff who worked there.
More like a zoo than a hotel during MJ’s legendary stay, Mr. Jackson spent his time at the Oberoi roaming among his hoards of fans (many of whom loitered around the hotel in swarms to catch a mere glimpse of the pop star).
It’s no secret that Michael Jackson loved a good party. This is why The Kohinoor Suite (where he stayed) was adorned with flowers, balloons, confetti and bowls of sweets and chocolates to give it that “festive feeling” MJ so enjoyed.
Michael Jackson refused to have the air conditioning turned on in his room, and insisted that his body guards maintain a distance at all time to give him space to roam. The four butlers at his service could come as close as they wanted, though, so long as they were bringing him sweet white wine, Fanta, Gatorade, Diet Coke and chocolates of various shapes and flavours. Wow.
Curious about the Kohinoor Suite? This is the nicest room at the Oberoi and is where visiting Heads of State usually choose to stay when they visit the Oberoi Mumbai. With a sauna and Jacuzzi bath in the room, we’re sure MJ had a comfortably steamy stay - just the way he liked it.
The Oberoi Mumbai (not to be confused with the Oberoi Trident Mumbai, which was targeted in last November’s Mumbai terror attacks) is currently closed for renovations.
