Celebrating the Stanley Cup on Granville

and other parts of downtown during the games
from Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association

Granville Street in downtown Vancouver will continue to be 'centre ice' as the dream of Stanley Cup victory is lived out in the coming weeks for both home and away games. Creating a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all fans is the priority. For downtown business owners and operators, here are some updates and tips from the City of Vancouver, Vancouver Police Department, Vancouver Fire Department and the Downtown Vancouver BIA.

PEDESTRIANS ONLY
For both home and away games, Granville Street will be for pedestrians only starting at 2pm. All games start at 5pm. Buses will be re-routed to Howe and Seymour. Please let your customers know in advance. Signs indicating the change will be posted at bus stops.

BROADCASTING ON 700 BLOCK
All games will be broadcast on a large screen TV on the 700 block of Granville St. between West Georgia and Robson Streets in a free viewing area. VPD will limit the number of people that can view the games and control access to the area at both the north and south end of the street with fencing and backpack searches. Access to businesses will remain open, but limited to only those allowed in the viewing zone.

KEEPING PEOPLE SAFE - AND MOVING
To make more room for pedestrians and to lessen the temptation for exuberant behaviour, newspaper boxes and bus shelters will be removed along Granville Street. Bus stops will still be in use in between games. Newspaper boxes will also be removed along Robson Street.

Businesses along those blocks are asked to remove their loose street furniture and A-boards on game days, and those with dumpsters in the back alleys are being asked to secure the bins to each other and/or the building and remove any totes and other materials.

Fixed patios are strongly encouraged to assess the use of their patios at the beginning of the third periods. If there are no customers, restaurants are asked to pack up and secure the furniture and/or take it inside before the game ends.

Note: on-street parking in the south end of Granville will be removed. Use of public transit is strongly encouraged. TransLink is extending its hours and train/bus capacity.

MONITORING THE EVENT
The outdoor viewing on Granville Street will be reviewed after each game and adjustments made as necessary to make improvements for businesses, pedestrians and hockey fans.

LOTS OF PLACES TO CELEBRATE
If your business isn't on the bandwagon, it's now or never! There are lots of ways to celebrate Canuck fever downtown and all businesses are encouraged to offer viewing opportunities for their customers or passersby, decorate your windows, have staff dress in game-gear and get creative with your safe, fun and welcoming celebrations. Or check out the free celebrations at Canada Place or the CBC Plaza or for a minimal cost, Rogers Arena for away games.
