Canada Line Opening Day

Large crowds expected to ride the new Canada Line
Opening Day, Monday, Aug 17, 2009 1-9pm

METRO VANCOUVER — After four years of construction and controversy, the $2-billion Canada Line — linking Richmond to Vancouver — will open its doors to the public Monday morning.

Some 6,000 people an hour are expected to ride the new rapid transit line on Monday, when passengers can ride for free between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.

TransLink is warning passengers to expect long waits.

The Canada Line is expected to take 200,000 one-way automobile trips off the road system each day and create a corridor for future development stretching 19 kilometres along Cambie, across the Fraser River and into Richmond.

It will also benefit tourists, who will be able to reach the airport within 26 minutes from downtown Vancouver.

Things to Remember

This is going to be a very busy day with lots of people excited to ride the line. Please take note of the following:

Bikes and Strollers:
To accommodate as many riders as possible, bicycles will not be allowed on the trains on opening day. There will be stroller and bicycle valets at designated stations. Although strollers will be allowed to board, we ask that you think about the volume of people that will be on the line and consider parking it at a valet station.

Bathrooms/First Aid:
There will be bathrooms, information tents and first aid facilities along the line for opening day. Please see the map below for more information.

Lineups:
Be prepared to wait in line. Thousands of people across the Lower Mainland are excited to ride the line on its opening day, so wear appropriate shoes and bring a positive attitude – it will make the day a much more enjoyable experience for everyone.
